Where is Putnam County?
Putnam County
is in New York
state and is located about 60 miles North of New York City. It is situated
directly North of Westchester County, South of Dutchess
County, bordered on the West by the majestic Hudson River (across from the
United States Military Academy at West Point), and on the East by
Connecticut. The scene at left is taken from a high vantage point on Bear
Mountain facing Northeast - looking directly at Putnam County.
Putnam County has several historic sites, one
of which is the proudly displayed statue of Sybil Ludington - Revolutionary
War Heroine. On April 26, 1777, at age 16, she rode alone during the night on
horseback covering many miles through the countryside to alert the volunteer
militia to the burning of nearby Danbury,
Connecticut, by the British.
She was a very young female version of Paul Revere but not as well known. You
can find this statue in Carmel overlooking Lake Gleneida.
Putnam County
is close enough to New York City
and other cities and major highways for residents to take advantage of many
employment, education, and cultural opportunities. Much of Putnam County
is purposely kept rural which offers a great place to relax and be refreshed.
From favorite fishing spots, bike routes, hiking trails, and outdoor parks
for seeking solitude in the outdoors, to hunting treasures in antique shops
(such as Cold Spring pictured at left), visiting museums, staying at bed
& breakfast inns, and attending music events, it's a great place to enjoy
living.
